Etymologie
Traditionally derived from Proto-Indo-EuropÀÀsch *tewtĂ©hâ (âthe people; tribeâ) with the semantic shift "people" â "army" â "camp". However that has been criticized as unlikely (the normal development would be "camp" â "army"). Kloekhorst argues that Hittite word can formally only reflect an i-stem tewt-i-, and finally endorses an alternative etymology proposed by Melchert, from PIE *dÊ°hâ-uti-, a zero-grade derivative of *dÊ°ehâ- (âto do, put, placeâ) (whence also Hittite (dai-i/ti-).
